The key is to find a happy medium between discussing your career goals and not talking about yourself at all. All good conversations, like relationships, are about give and take. Start by ending any conversations with a genuine thank you and then follow up again with a note, either hand written or via email. Leaving a networking contact with a negative impression can not only cause you to lose that contact, but can have ripple effects if they tell others about you. Always be prepared to give back to your professional networking connections. Helping others in your network will make it more likely for people to remember you — and want to help you out in return.
